Transferring Photos from iPhoto to iCloud

Because iPhoto is to be discontinued and now iCloud is an option for storing photos, I would like to make room on Macbook by storing my iPhoto images on iCloud. My confusion comes in with the Photos app. Can I go directly into iCloud to store my photos or do I have to transfer them to Photos app first? I don't see an upload button. I would also like to store my videos there as well.

How do I do this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

The first thing that you need to do is to migrate your iPhoto library to Photos. You can do this by dragging the iPhoto library (not the application) onto the photos application. Once you have done this, open the Photos references and enable iCloud photo library, your photos will then commence to upload To the cloud.
