Thank you Rudegar. This worked for new apps but when I try to update existing apps, the new password isn't accepted/recognised either. I have 24 apps that need to be updated but I'm not able to. I am asked repeatedly to sign in and when I do, I'm told it's an incorrect password.

SIgn out of your Apple ID, restart your iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out.
Restart your iPad.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Sign in again.
Thank you Demo. I did as you suggested, hit the update button, entered the password as requested, the icon circled and the returned to the update button. I hit it again, entered the password again as requested, the icon circled and then reverted to the update button as before.. No joy, I'm afraid.

Try this now. Force restart your iPad and then try again. You will not lose any data when you do this.
Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Then let go of the buttons and let the iPad start up completely.
Thanks again Demo but this didn't work either, sorry. The only thing that does work is if remove the app and load it again. It means that I lose my data though but at least I can use the apps I need.

Will have to I'm afraid. only ½ dozen are not free so it won't break the bank. It's the inconvenience and frustrating waste of time that bother me most. Thanks for your interest and suggestions - much appreciated. Susannah
