Alternative to Numbers

Can I download Microsoft Office-Particularily Excel-to use with my MacBook Air,-OS X Yosemite- instead of Numbers?

You can download Microsoft Office for Mac from Microsoft if you are willing to pay for it.


If you want it for free, LibreOffice has a spreadsheet application builtin.

Microsoft Excel 2016 for the Mac works well.


You can also run Excel for Windows on the Mac via Bootcamp, or, even more convenient, Parallels or Fusion. It works quite well, even on the MBA.


One subscription for the cost of a couple of lattes a month allows you to install Excel (and the rest of the Office suite) on multiple machines, including mobile devices. So the case for a "free" Excel wannabe that doesn't work quite the same as the real thing is much less compelling than it used to be.


Numbers, on the other hand, doesn't try to be an Excel clone and has some attractive design features that make it easier to use for many personal and small business projects.
