Trouble freeing up space on hard drive.

I tried freeing up space on my hard drive by deleting several large video files. However, after emptying the trash is complete there is no change to the amount of free space indicated. Is there a way to correct or fix this?

OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes. This should allow you to determine where differences or problems may be ocurring.
