Importing video into FCP X 10.2.1 from an external hard drive

Hello - when trying to import video from files stored on an external hard drive, the import window of FCP X won't allow me to select a range or insert in and out points, and yet such basic functionality is available when importing directly from a camera. Has anyone encountered this problem?
