How to separate stuck-together files on desktop?

Several of the .rtf and alias files on the desktop of our new AIR have become stuck together and can't seem to be separated. How do I do so? One title covers up another so some can't even be checked.

Open the Finder.

From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

Click Go then move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash then restart your Mac.

If that didn't help, do the same for: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

Better to keep files in folders than aliases on the desktop.
