I have 17k+ photos on my Mac and so far it's been uploading to iCloud photo library for over three weeks. It's take 4398 photos up so far. At this rate it is going to take another 69 days to finish. SURELY this can't be right. 😕

That largely depends on your upload speed and whether you have any videos in your library. I had around 20,000 photos and it took a couple of weeks.

That largely depends on your upload speed and whether you have any videos in your library. I had around 20,000 photos and it took a couple of weeks.
You may also gain a slight upload speed if you are using Ethernet connection instead
of wi-fi internet access... sometimes up to 3x faster by wire, depending on location, etc.
Be sure to have good local backups of your content, should you be unable to connect
or access cloud storage at a later time.
