email not working when sending excel spreadsheet in numbers

Trying to send a copy of a spreadsheet to an email address. Format chosen is Excel. This has worked in the past. First attempt, nothing happened and send button grayed out. Spreadsheet in body of email disappeared. Rebooted iPad and everything now looks okay but I haven't received the spreadsheet at my email address or when attempting to send spreadsheet to gmail address. No illegal characters are being used in Subject or To spaces. Running IOS 8.4. 4.8GB free on iPad with 114GB capacity.
