It doesn't have to be sad. Upgrade your OS first to Snow Leopard http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Then use Softawre update to get to 10.6.8 and gain access to the Mac App Store. Then upgrade to Lion http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion and update it to 10.7.5. Be aware that with only 2GB of ram, which is not upgradable, Lion may not perform up to your expectations and stopping the upgrades at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 might be a better choice for your old MBA.

As far upgrading the 4200rpm PATA hard drive, it can be done but it isn't that easy. See here http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook-air/macbook-air-faq/macbook-air-ho w-to-upgrade-the-hard-drive-swap-for-ssd…

OWC sells a PATA ZIF SSD for your Macbook Air 1,1 http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina/Apple-MacBook-Air-2008-Drive-I nternal
