I get the following error-message 4MEM/62/40000000: 0x87cfd898. What does that this indicate and what should I do in order to fix the issue?
iMac 2012 27. I come straight to the screen where I can re-install OSX or try and debug the OS whenever it starts up.

That is the code for a memory module or memory slot failure. Have you added RAM? If so, that error can indicate the RAM you added is incompatible. If you added RAM, what brand and what specs?
Known third-party RAM that cause problem reports here--although the makers say they work-- are:

PNY RAM

No RAM has been added but anyway I think I will start by trying to replace the RAM (avoiding the ones you mention and opting for OWC).
