I want a page numbering in the footer there, but there is no footer frame.
How do I get an automatic page numbers at the bottom of the page?
If you are using Pages 5.5.3 you should be able to open a blank document, click on layout, and then go to the bottom and click. You would see areas to insert your page numbers there.

Is OS X 10.6.8 correct?
What version of Pages are you using?
Pages 5 does not allow facing pages.
Pages '09 (Pages 4.3)
Inspector > Document Tab > Document Button > Headers and Footers > tick (check) the boxes.
