What version of OS X are you running?
Deselect Proxies if selected.
System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab
Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
Click "OK" then "Apply”.
Ty dominic23.....This suggestion does not work. no proxies are/were checked.
No proxies selected, and I don't know where to look for the OS version
If you can't boot in Safe Mode and you are having issues with multiple apps, then you need to restore OS X.
Shut down your Mac.
Wait at least ten seconds then startup while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to verify and repair the startup disk if necessary and restore OS X using OS X Recovery.

If I do this will I loose information from my computer?
If you have a backup setup using Time Machine, you can restore from that backup using OS X Recovery.
Very important to backup your data on a timely basis.
