Why does a reddish hue show up in Mail at times?

I would attach a copy to show, but the insert image option won't load any jpg from my laptop... I guess that's another problem....

Anyway what turns reddish is the are where the Inbox, Flagged, Drafts, and Sent folders are. They happen to be on the server. All my other folders are "On My Mac" and don't turn reddish.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), Apple Mail 8.2, IMAP,Comcast

Actually, he already did that - three screenshots.

As the OP said: problem appears to be solved.

Again... with all due respect. a MAc Display screenshot is far different than 3 shots of "Mail Windows" - the full display gives us all "context" once and for all.

But sine the OP did say "close the file." - I will close the file on the cosmetics and let ya'll hash out the real problems that still exist

bye all (unless directly addressed)

OK. Here are 3 shots.

The first one is how my desktop looks with mail on top as I normally use it.

The second one tries to show you what kinds of things I might have open at the same time and may be behind mail. It is not how I keep my desktop looking. They are the same things I mentioned in an earlier reply - things like safari, word, excel, preview.. nothing colorful or exotic!!

The third one is my desktop picture which I sent earlier.

Also, since I have clicked on Reduce Transparency the colors aren't supposed to come back wherever they are coming from based on the understanding I got from Diane's explanation..... So, I'm thinking it's a wait and see game.

But, I'll still be trying to figure out what's wrong with mail in that not all sent emails get to the sent folder...... another topic, bigger pain....

Actually, all the "Use This Mailbox As" options are grayed out. Maybe setting the mailbox behaviors in my Apple Mail Account overrides these choices? Anyway, I know I'm in the wrong place for mail problems. But, let me share what I know about my situation, and maybe you can turn me over to the right person/forum who I will gladly work with to see if we can figure it out, unless it's not just me and there's a bug/issue between Apple Mail, Yosemite, and Comcast......

Please see below, and thanks for you time and efforts.

My configuration info: Macbook pro, Mail 8.2, Yosemite 10.10.4, IMAP account, Comcast Server.

Two months ago I had a laptop and used Apple Mail with a POP account to access my mail on Comcast.

I recently got an iPhone, so needed to change my Apple Mail account from a POP to an IMAP so I could handle an email only once!

However, after setting everything up, I’ve had problems with mail. The two most obvious are:

  1. Not all emails that I send get into the Sent Folder on the Comcast server,
  2. Draft Folder grows. Unneeded copies of drafts get created, and stay in the Draft Folder. They don't go away until I delete them.
  3. An Outbox Folder is created sometimes. Sometimes the email is big, sometimes it's very small.

All these occur intermittently and sporadically.

Possible related, contributing factors:

The IMAP path preference under the “Advanced” tab in Mail is blank which is how it was set up when someone from Apple told me how to set it up. Seems to work with it blank.

  1. Port under the “Advanced” tab in Mail is set up as 993. It sometimes, somehow gets reset to 143 at times. Not sure why, what this means. It's now 143 in my illustration below.
  2. Comcast server and Apple Mail connection seems degraded at times. Can slow syncing cause all these problems?

The curious thing is that I have checked with my addressees, and the 'missing' messages arrive as they should in their Inboxes. So why they are not also on the server in the Sent Folder is the question/problem.

I am BCCing myself on everything I send (reply, forward, etc.) to make sure I get my BCC copy. I’m sorta I guessing that if I get my BCC, then that means that the actual SEND operation occurred, but the failure point is somewhere in how a copy of the SENT email gets into the SENT FOLDER on Comcast....

My Apple Mail account info showing ports, mailbox behaviors, etc. follow:

Actually, all the "Use This Mailbox As" options are grayed out.

You have to have a folder selected in order to use these options.

In the folder list, scroll down past the default folders. You should see Comcast. You might need to select show to see the folders.

Do you see a Sent folder. Are there messages in this folder? If yes, you can assign this folder "use this mailbox as sent mailbox".

Comcast IMAP is not the most robust IMAP. You would be better off using another provider. There are many free options to choose. Some of those popular are iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook.com

I forward all my Comcast emails to Gmail since they are 99% spam.

Comcast offers two different settings. Don't mix options in columns. Try Recommended first then try Only if Needed.

As it is not advised to divulge any personal info, I've asked the hosts to remove your screenshots which contained a lot of private information - I copied them, obscured the private info and will post them here.

One thing I noticed: on the first screenshot, the outgoing mail server is called "mail.comcast.net". That is unusual at best - the outgoing usually has an smtp in it and, following Comcast's instructions in how to set up Mail, it mentions smtp.comcast.net:

Here are your two screenshots:

Actually, I did try to "Use This Mailbox As" options as you describe, and they are grayed out. I've seen when searching on the web that other people sometimes experience this. Please see my picture below. You can see I'm on Sent, there are sent emails displayed behind, and options are grayed out.

Got me.... I tried to keep out as much personal info as I could.User uploaded file

On the Comcast port settings I don't mix them. I set up the recommended. I set it up using 993 and 587. Then, sometimes the 993 is all of a sudden 143 and I didn't do it!!!! Got me!

So, I'm afraid the only new thing you're sharing is that Comcast isn't robust, which I don't know enough to say anything definitively other than I might try AT&T because of Comcast customer service. So, if we agree that it isn't robust, what are the chances that my inclination that Apple Mail, Yosemite, and the Comcast server aren't working well together, and that is the underlying issue? I know other people are experiencing the issues I am. I see people suggesting that rather than save Sent, Draft... on the server, to save it on the laptop. But, that defeats the whole purposes of an IMAP account unless I'm missing something. And, I may be since I've been dealing with it for a couple of months, and am not an expert....

Thanks again for your efforts, time, and sharing your ideas and trying to help me out.

I would try the smtp - I've never seen the mail.comcast as an outgoing server. I've also never seen port 143 for anything. It seems there is some misbehaving going on - either Comcast servers are not cooperating/rejecting because the settings aren't what they expect to see or there is a problem on their end. I will, as a matter of consistency, generally blame Comcast - I used to have them and finally gave up and changed providers. At the time, they did not support IMAP, so I had a POP account.

As for blanking out stuff on screenshorts: open the screenshot in Preview. Click on View and scroll down to "show edit toolbar". There will be a toolbar above your actual image. Check it out: squares, lines, circles, add text, various colors - lots of options. That is what I used. Then hit save and your screenshot will have been altered.

I have changed the description from mail.comcast.net to smtp.comcast.net and will see how it goes. I alway "try" to pair port 993 incoming with port 587 outgoing, but like I said stuff sometimes goes offline, or 993 magically turns into 143....

Of course I should have known about sharing personal stuff. Thanks for the edit tip using preview. I'll experiment with that.

Thanks again.

Just to be clear, you do not have to change your provider to use a different email. Comcast is my ISP but I have many other email accounts that are not Comcast. Comcast is new to IMAP. Results have been iffy for many users.

I suggest you create a new User in System Preferences. Log into the new User and setup Comcast account. In this clean environment, you will be able to see more clearly what a default setup looks like. I added my Comcast account in a new User and it setup automatically for me by entering my email and password.

Notice the reddish hue? That's the Yosemite Desktop bleeding through.

If it's OK to share on the forum, who's your provider of choice ? Do you use Apple mail with it?

I switched to Centurylink (enhanced DSL > 15 mbps) and yes, I use Mail with it. I use both their POP account on my desktop (since that is really the only place where I want my mail and don't want it synced everywhere). I also have it set up as an IMAP account with an iCloud account for the very rare occasions where I have to access my emails on my MBP or iPad.

And yes, you do not have to use your ISP's email; I like to have/use that one for my private emails from/to friends. Other than that, I do not give it out - period. For everything else, I have several online email providers (one is strictly for all things Apple and another for all those places that insist on having your email address but really don't need it, usually resulting in lots of spam).
