In removing the screen protector on my iPhone 5 the screen appears to be blemished.

Just bought an iPhone 6 so I'm trying to clean my iPhone 5. I removed a protective screen cover that I installed 2 years ago. The screen appears to be somewhat faded. I used a damp paper towel with no luck.Any tips on cleaning it? Could the protective screen have some sort of gooey stuff that is stuck to it or permanently damaged the screen? Thanks for your thoughts!
