Buy the RAM from a source such as Crucial or OWC. The seller's website will provide installation instructions.

You can install the following: For a 20" model it's 8 GBs. See How to remove or install memory for installing and removing RAM. Reliable vendors are OWC, DataMem, and Crucial.
Download Mactracker, look up your model iMac, select the RAM tab. This free utility will tell you the maximum amt of RAM your model iMac can handle.
Make sure any memory you get is of the 1.5V variety and not the lower voltage (like 1.2V or 1.35V). That being said, faster memory speeds will default down to the fastest speed your computer will support. The gotcha is not checking voltage support. Newer computers from 2013-on will support lower voltage memory with those 2012 and older supporting only 1.5V and up. This fact will open the possibilities of where you can buy your memory instead of just those vendors who want you to buy their verified brand.
