Printing through Hotspot

I use my iPhone 5 as a hotspot. I connect an iPad and an AirPrint printer (Canon). It takes a half hour to print a jpeg and quite a while to print plain text. Checked out printer with Canon and it as well as its wireless are functioning as they should. I tried connecting the printer and iPad to another network and it works fine. Must be something to do with the hotspot. Any ideas? Thanks.
