Even though my audio books have their proper chapter names, when synced to the iPad, they show up as Track 1, Track 2, etc.
Is there a way to correct this?

Not right now. It seems to be baked into the app. Much unhappiness all around. Hopefully the next update will fix it.

Has anyone seen a statement of any kind from Apple about this? I encountered this problem the day of the update. I am stunned there has been nothing from Apple about it.
