How do i delete content from my Ipod nano without syncing?

I have an Ipod nano and itunes says it is over capacity, so it won't let me sync with it. How do I remove things from the ipod to make room for the new stuff I want to sync onto it? the only instructions I have for deleting require me to sync with it, and itunes won't sync with it.
