backing up mail server?

Right now, I've got the machine where our mail server is running backing up by way of Time Machine. Is that enough for the the mail server, and all IMAP inboxes to be backed up?

Or is there a recommended backup service to make sure that there's a backup in case the server goes down?

Thanks!

Using a Min Server here and we clone the discs to ensure we don't have permissions problems if we have to recover a broken disc. Recovery can be from the booted clone disc. Decoding hashed user names and applying the correct permissions was an expensive job the first time we lost a HD. It also encouraged the finance people to authorise the spending necessary to do back up properly.

Thanks Mike!

So are you categorizing the disk cloning as the "...back up properly." or are you doing something else instead? Disk cloning came to mind last night. But, I just want to make sure it's robust enough.

Of course, we won't recover anything that came after the last clone job. But, that's the nature of the beast.

A friend of mine mentioned Retrospect. But, I haven't had a chance to check it out this morning.

We use more than one disk and clone to them on alternate days. That way we shouldn't lose more than a days data. We tried Time Machine with Leopard and it was flakey. Once one HD had failed the choice of cloning was recommended by a local network/server specialist that we use when I have no time or none of the knowledge needed for the task.

Bootable clones mean we can re-purpose one of the other Macs in the office if the server suffers a severe hardware failure and be back in action in with minimal downtime. We sell mainly through the net and email is our life-blood for leads.

Retrospect was very expensive and required me to do a fair bit of study to get it working right. We went with quick and cost-effective!

We are using Carbon Copy Cloner which has been easy to get going and the latest version allows the jobs to be defined for one click use (very useful when I'm not there as the others in the office work to KISS :-) )

Awesome! That's kind of the way I've been leaning after doing the research today. The biggest question I'll have to discuss with the owner is how many clones he's interested in using. Obviously, the hope is to never use it. But, I've been down that path before with drives, and sure wish I'd had a clone to throw in the machine.

I looked over CCC and SD. But, CCC looks so much more polished, and there's no small amount of popular posts for either one.

Did you ever look at offsite backup? I looked as several as a third layer of defense. But, one of the sites kind of scared me when they said the original backup will take around two weeks to complete! Not sure what size that backup is though, so perhaps that's for several Tb.

Off-site this part of rural England was a non-starter as we have the proverbial wet-string broadband connection (7MBs if we're lucky). 300GB of data would take weeks to upload at 1MBs! We store the cloned disks in a separate building with an adjacent business. There are plenty of these we look after your stuff, you look after ours arrangements around here.
