2 things - kernel panics in Firefox; can I upgrade Safari on Snow Leopard

1) Using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a 2006 iMac.

New problem - keep getting a "kernel panic" when exiting Hotmail or Virgin email in Firefox.

Screen freezes over and message appears in multi-language saying need to restart computer.

Have tried re-installing latest version of Firefox - still happens

Have successfully started in safe mode, but couldn't read Firefox Screen so deduce some incompatability.

OK in my old version of Safari so deduce Firefox issue.

Any guidance appreciated.

2) How do I install latest version of Safari please? My version - 5.1.10 - is now unsupported.

Do I need to install Yosemite?

Can my Mac run Yosemite?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

1. Try looking/posting here.

2. You need to upgrade your OS. Check the model number to make sure your computer is the year you think it is.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
  • 8 GB or more of available space

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Applications Compatibility (2)

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
