When I click "shut down" my MBP logs off.

When I click "shut down" my MBP logs off instead. There is a pop up box that flashes up for a minute but I have not been able to read the message because it goes away too quickly. I cannot get my computer to turn off unless I hold down the power button.

I run OS X 10.7.5. Thanks!
