Is anybody experiencing 'periodic' failed Apple Pay UK in-shop transactions even though there are no issues with the connected Visa card account?

Even though it has been confirmed with my card issuer that there are no issues with my card account and yet, sometimes, when attempting to pay with Apple Pay, some transactions still fails; the cashier then resets their terminal for a further attempt, and again, the transaction still fails to process. I then go into another shop to make a purchase, and Apple Pay works perfectly! As I have already mentioned, these failed sessions occur only periodically, there is no set pattern or frequency, and can happen in any shop, even in the same shops that have previously worked.

The biggest issue I find during a failed transaction in a shop is the embarrassment caused especially when there is a long queue of customers waiting behind to pay, then I'm having to hold them up even further having to find my wallet and card because Apple Pay is not working.

Maybe this could be a temporary, and intermittent 'teething' issue within the Apple Pay system which, hopefully, will be addressed in the near future.

You're welcome!

Reporting failed payments

I suggest that you keep reporting any future failed payments - ideally via a separate report each time. That way, each will definitely be logged as a separate incident. Also, the more specific each report is, the easier it will be for Apple to investigate (including with the payment network and bank) and hopefully resolve.

Add additional cards

You can also add additional payment cards to Apple Pay (separately on each device).

That way, if your first payment attempt fails, you can select a different card and try again, which only takes a few seconds (with no need to find a purse, wallet or physical card). To add additional credit or debit cards to Apple Pay:

On iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus

  • Open Passbook and tap Plus button in the upper-right corner

On Apple Watch

  • Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap My Watch (bottom left tab)
  • Scroll down and tap Passbook & Apple Pay
  • Tap Add credit or Debt Card, the follow the onscreen steps

See below for instructions on how to choose a different card at the time of payment:
