Upload speed and times

I have uploaded several large video files into iTunes U lately and the time required has been extremely long on all efforts at different times of the day.

Using my university connection (100 Mbps though I'm sure I wasn't getting that upload speed)it took just now 25 minutes
to upload a 393Mb MPEG-4 file.

Has anyone else uploaded large files and experienced slow speeds?

I'm not sure if I'm getting throttled down by the college, Apple or both.

Hi Ken,

The connection between Apple and your campus is the limiting factor in upload times. You are connected to your campus' network via a 100 Mbps link, but your campus' connection to Apple is much slower.

25 minutes to upload a file of this size seems like a reasonable amount of time based on our testing. Its important to remember that upload time is often quite slower than download time for files of the same size.

helpful to know there's a max

it was a 508mb m4v - it was still loading at 25 minutes & I was away from the computer when it timed out, so it was the file size. That is one from our speaker series & it runs 1:23:44 - not an extraordinary time length for that. I plan to convert to mp3 for those too, but some has visual elements as well (slides etc.)

** somewhat related question: how long before you are timed out for inactivity while in the admin mode on iTunes U? This happens to me frequently.

Ken,

Hmmm ... interesting question. I'm sure Apple has some kind of official answer ... but I've never noticed a timeout while logged into iTunes U using my "Administrator" credential. I "think" the lognest I've ever been logged into iTunes U (inactively) as an admin was something like an hour ... but usually I'm just in to setup a new course for someone at our site.

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8) I lied. I'm running Leopard

I continue to have problems uploading a 272Mb mp4 from Campus. We have multiple T1s, our sysadmin has tweaked bandwidth for me so I can upload a bit faster. The problem is, my upload NEVER succeeds - it times out every time. It seems to time out around the 30 minute mark.

To compound the problem, the video I'm trying to upload is a presentation by our president.

Any idea how I can avoid losing my hair (or worse)?

Apple does not limit the bandwidth of PC users in anyway shape or form.

Are you using Internet Explorer or Firefox on the PC? I'll bet you are using Internet Explorer. There are known issues with IE and uploading files. IE 6 is known to be very slow in uploading large files, IE 7 is supposed to fix this problem.

Try Firefox on the PC, if that helps then it is the known IE 6 issue.
