You have to have a valid payment method or you cannot download from the app store. This could be an iTunes gift card but generally people associate a credit card. Try these links.

Change or remove your Apple ID payment information in the iTunes Store - Apple Support
Redeem and use iTunes Gift Cards and content codes - Apple Support
