Like I mentioned above it is not just you and it is a somewhat common problem. Here are more details, perhaps more than you wanted to know... 🙂
Please check these Apple threads on iOS 8 Wi-Fi issues. They are long and no need to waste a lot of time reading there. The bottom line is that there are many people having issues with Wi-FI and I have summarized the concerns below.
Re: Re: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems
Re: Wi-Fi not working on iOS 8.4
The problems with Wi-Fi occur on a subset of devices only as the majority of users are not having any issues. In my own case my 4 iOS devices connect ok but have difficulties with slow download speeds when Bluetooth is turned on. They function at full ISP speeds with BT off. However my MacBook Pro as well as my two Windows PCs work perfectly with the same router regardless of Bluetooth settings. Others have reported far more serious issues, inability to stay connected for instance. I have posted on the threads above several times and as a result I and others who did the same got calls from AppleCare. Apple collected various logs from my iOS devices and took extensive information regarding my Wi-Fi configuration (the calls - 2 of them - lasted over one hour each). Others have reported the same.
Apple used to use a networking routine called mDNSResponder in iOS 7 and in Mavericks. In iOS 8 and in Yosemite they changed to a new routine called DiscoveryD but in the latest version of Yosemite, 10.10.4, they switched back to mDNSResponder (in the release notes they stated improvements to Wi-FI). According to Apple iOS 9 will be released in the fall so hopefully there will be improvements there as well.
In the mean time you may try to turn OFF Bluetooth and AirDrop and see if that helps you, it did me. Also if your router is dual band, i.e., able to broadcast on the 5GHz band also, you may try 5GHz and see if that helps, less interference there. Also make sure your router firmware is up to date and you are using the latest version for that router. Also try reseting Network settings on your phone and then reconnecting (generally this works for a little while but the issue turns to return for some). If none of the ideas on that thread help, just hang in there until iOS 9 is out in the fall.
Hope this helps you.... elcpu 😐
