I am planning to preorder the iPhone 6s, I would like to know If I can preorder using a gift card, also if is possible how the gift card work, it adds credits to my account or I can only use it at the time of purchase?

If you add an Apple Store Gift Card (not an iTunes Gift Card) to your Apple account, then it creates a credit on your Apple account, and any purchases will be taken from that credit before attempting to use your credit card. So, the answer is yes, you can.
