i cannot access my HD for serial number

my HD is not fuctioning so I need to bpook a genius phone call / service appt.

But I cannot access the computer to offer a serial number....

What do I do?

You can check your iMac serial number without turning it on. See -> How to find the serial number on your iMac - Apple Support

Look under the stand,the serial number should be listed there. Also if you still have the original box, the SN is printed on that too.
