Unable to add music from iPhone onto itunes

I just reset my computer and all the music is gone. I was planning on bringing the music on my iphone with itunes. The only songs that came back were the purchased songs. I was unable to sync and bring back my (perfectly legal) dowloaded songs from my phone onto itunes. I saw another post saying that itunes was unable to being other music from iphones that hasn't been purchased on the store. Why? This is extremely frustrating.

The iPhone is not a storage device. The sync is one way - computer to iPhone. The only exception is attains purchases.

As provided by turingtest, there is third party software (not supported by Apple) that may be able to get the other music.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. This is how you would get your music back. The iPhone does not behave as an external storage device. It mirrors the selected content of your computer.
