Q: Amazon crashing Safari today. Had to force shut down.

I've had Amazon lock up my MBP before. It's been at least a year ago though. Today when it locked up, option command esc wouldn't work I had to hold down the power button to quit. I started in recovery mode and ran Disk Utility (repair disk/permissions). I do that anytime I've had a crash like that. Can't hurt I guess. I shut off my router to keep it from going right back there after I restarted. After a while I went back to their page and gave it some time to load. Same thing.

2009 MBP 10.7.5 Safari 6.1.6

Just curious to see if anyone else has had this happen. Haven't tried another browser yet. Maybe not going to Amazon will save me some money!

I noticed this problem also with amazon's "main" webpage.  It is a "Amazon" problem as all other websites are fine on my MacSafari.  I contacted amazon to let them know about the problem and they gave me a streamlined amazon website page to utilize.

You can try this link: www.amazon.com/access

I think I'm noticing a pattern here.  It seems to be affecting those of us with old systems.  I keep seeing the year 2009 for many of the systems.  Could it be something with that year's firmware or GPU that is affected?  That could be why it's not being reported by so many people...

Same problem here.  Whenever I load amazon.com using safari, my system freezes (I can move the mouse around, but that's it - clicking does nothing).  It happens 100% of the time.  The only solution is a hard reboot.  If I turn off javascript, the problem does not occur.

The problem occurs on a MacBook Pro 17" (early 2009), running Yosemite 10.10.5 (latest version, everything up to date).

I also have a MacBook Air 11" (mid 2011), running 10.8.5 (i.e., not Yosemite), and the problem does NOT occur.

This is certainly one of the worst instances of being screwed by having older system that I've experienced!

Yeah. Mines a 2009 also. My MBP has a second GPU built in. I think I'll try it, see what happens.

    DorieW,

Thank you for posting that link!

Works well, no freezing and seems to load a bit quicker too.

Interestingly enough, the Amazon page main page now loads for me with a low-resolution image at the top, and no javascript or special features. Completely different now. Anyone else seeing this?

Amazon now works fine with Firefox; not so well with Safari. Main page rendering is quite different, with no images, just links in blue down the left side of the page. However, Safari woks fine with MacBookAir and iPad. At least it's useable on my iMac with Firefox.

I just checked a few minutes ago, and now Safari is rendering the Amazon pages correctly. All seems OK for now.

I've just checked the support community on Amazon.co.uk. It seems it's not only Safari - or even just Mac - users. It's affecting all browsers and all types of computer, so it looks like an Amazon problem. However, their tech support response of 'there's nothing to see here, move along people' or 'it's your browser's fault' seems pretty typical for technical support depts of many companies, even when there are so many complaints on their own forum!

Had been following this when it first started as it was happening to me also on the day it was first reported.  I also have a 2009 MPB 17' and took it to the genius bar for some diagnostics, but by the time my appointment had come up it was working again, so they were looking at me strange, no one there had any idea what it could so they tested the video card first but everything came up clean.  Now the problem has started happening again so I took it right back to the store without an appointment just to see if anyone would take a look but they were jammed so I just showed one person who left who tried to push a new video card or saying its a problem with software and maybe look into restoring the computer. Sorry for the long update but thats whats been going on

I am on a macbook pro mid 2009 and having problems this week with Amazon website. I refuse to go there. I have to do a hard shut down as it freezes up and the bottom of my screen starts to flicker. This is ridiculous that Amazon won't fix it. it happened again late last night so not fixed yet.

I have had this problem for quite some time…. Safari freezes when I am Amazon… in this link, users were having this problem since at least May, 2015 Amazon website is causing my Web content to crash.  It only crashes when I look their kindle books

I was speaking with Apple tech support about 2 months ago, and we went though everything to try to eliminate the crashes, (for about an hour), then he switched to his supervisor, and we went through everything again…. the supervisor then said that he would do some research, and call me back, I waited for about a week….. he didn't call… he had given me his number at the time.  I called that number… no response.

In the link above, someone had indicated that if Javascript is Unchecked in … Safari >> Preferences >> Security… that it resolves the problem.  I am going to try that after typing in this reply…. one caveat to unchecking Javascript….. the "Reply" function doesn't work in Forums such as this.

Some on this Forum have been concerned that Yosemite might be the problem…. that is not the case, because I am still using Snow Leopard, with the same freezes.  It has to be Amazon, and if this problem has been going on since this past May, I doubt if Amazon has been burning the midnight oil to fix this problem.  Does anyone have Jeff Bezos cell number??

    Jim
