Q: syncing photos for new iPhone?

I am not sure if i need to "sync photos" from my old iPhone in iTunes backup program before switching to my new iPhone.

I have 1. put all my photos from the phone camera roll into the "Photo" program on my laptop

2. AND have synced my old phone using iTunes.

I am just not clear about if i need to sync my photos separately so they will appear on my new phone as they appear on my old phone in the camera roll. I have backed up my old phone to my laptop device because I can't use iCloud for that right now (but will switch all my devices to iCloud backup in the future for more security). Anyway, I want my new iPhone to look just like my old one and the photos/ camera roll are the most important part. Also -- not ALL the photos from my laptop are on my phone obviously because there isn't enough space on my phone. Just not sure if syncing the photos puts photos from my laptop on my phone or if it backs up iPhone camera roll to the area where new devices get installed...what to do here and don't want to make a bad mistake with my precious camera roll. This iPhone has been with me for years thru thick and thin and has been my life. So I don't want to screw this point up...(I know the rest of it is super easy/ installing).

This explains how to transfer the content from the old phone to the new one. Only the part about using iTunes will apply to you.

Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device - Apple Support

You can select the exact content that you want to sync to your phone. You can pick and choose every single time that you sync. This should be of some help as well.

This is what I would do. I would connect your old phone to your laptop (from your description I assume it is Windows). Open the Windows File Manager and your will see your old phone as a folder on the left side. Click on it an open the folders under DCIM (you may have several). Select all photos in those folders and copy them all to your computer. I would place them under Pictures > My Pictures on a new folder named as you wish (Old Phone ?). Once you have confirmed that you have transferred all of your old photos to your computer, I would create a new folder and copy into it (not move) the pictures you would like to see on your new iPhone. You can then go to iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Devices and click "prevent iPods.... from syncing automatically". You may have it that way already. Now connect your new phone to your PC, select it and under Photos sync that new folder with iTunes. The pictures will not appear in your Camera Roll but they will appear as a new Album titled whatever your new folder was called so chose its name appropriately. Hope this helps.

Edit: As I was typing the above Demo posted some very good links which may give you better choices.
