Ethernet connection (802.1X) not working

Hey,

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro late 2012 (running OS X Yosemite) to the Internet via Ethernet. The connection is 801.2X-secured, which means at some point (i.e. right after I plug in the cable) I would have to enter username and password in order to get the connection to work.

Yet, the hoped for input mask simply won't show up.

Some useful information:

  • the problem does not occur with other MacBooks, yet it does with other Ethernet cables
  • automatic connection is enabled (Network - Ethernet - Advanced... - 802.1X)
  • I reset the PRAM, as I read about someone who fixed a similar problem doing this
  • I restarted my MacBook several times
  • when plugged in, the cable is recognized and Ethernet is active, yet the authentication process won't stop (which might be due to me not being able to enter a username and password)

Thanks for any useful comments!

Thank you for your quick reply!

My research already led me to that piece of information and I found it quite unhelpful.

To sum my problem up:

All I have to do is (1) plug the Ethernet cable into my MacBook, (2) wait for the input mask to appear and (3) enter username and password. This is exactly how my flat mates achieved to establish their internet connection.

My problem is that step (1) is not followed by steps (2) and (3).

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Back up all data before proceeding.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

sudo mv /var/audit/current /tmp/

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.

If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Restart the computer. Test.
