Why am I not able to enter my gift card

I just bought a 25 dollar iTunes gift card and now that I'm trying to enter it in iTunes it turns out that gift cards are not an option? Why do they make these if you are not able to use them? Did I just waste 25 dollars on this gift card for nothing?
