Change default aspect ratio when cropping in Photos

It does not seem to be possible.

I cannot find any preference setting in Photos that controls the default aspect ratio, and I searched the binary of the application for hidden defaults, but I cannot find any that can be set with "defaults write ....".

You may want to send a feature request to Apple. They are still developing the next version to be released with El Capitan, and Apple has already included some of the most requested features.

I think this feature would be very useful - as I wish I could set crop aspect to original. How does one make a suggestion ? I've looked at the support pages, but ended up an endless loop ....

Still an absent feature I see. This for me is one of the many reasons that Photos can be used as little more than a viewer for photos edited in a much more capable app, or as something to merely manage and tinker with phone snapshots. Ridiculous that users have to 'guess' the dimensions with freeform crop when exporting photos for various purposes. Totally useless. And for what it's worth, yes I've submitted feedback 😟

You don't have to stick with Freeform, it's just the default, and it still can't be changed.

Are you not seeing the other choices available?

Hit CROP and then ASPECT, to see other aspects. No need to guess at all.

Wow.... and where does this knowledge come from?

I blamed Apple thousands of times while having to

a) click on "Aspect"

b) select "Original"

for EVERY SINGLE PHOTO.

Ridiculous design.

In Photos 3.0 on on High Sierra you do no longer have to click on "Aspect" every time when cropping. This panel stays open, unless you close it again. One small step in the right direction 😁
