Q: iCloud Apple ID reset

icloud keeps popping up and asking me for the password associated with my apple ID which was set up 3 years ago and which I nolonger have access too therefore  a reset email doesn't work. It gives me an option to answer a security question however you need to enter your birth date details first to get to the security questions, and Icloud is not accepting my birth date.

This problem only occurs with my icloud. How do I reset my iCloud Apple ID and password to match my current Apple ID?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Are you signed into iCloud currently with the old ID with Find My iPhone/Mac turned on?

    OR

    Do you have Two-Step Verification?

These are intended as mutually exclusive questions, but depending on your answers, there may be some solutions available.

    Cheers,

Yes to first question  I am signed into (or at least the field shows) my old ID and Find my iPhone is turned on.  An of course won't let me turn it off or sign off that ID without a password.  Tried to rest password but it won't accept my birthday - or my husbands.  Not sure about the Two-step verification question.  Dont know what that means.  I did sign up for a support call from Apple tomorrow morning if nothing resolves tonite.  I have had this problem for 1 year, but finally decided I need to get it fixed.  thx

Is your current Apple ID a totally separate Apple ID, or did you change your old Apple ID (the one that is signed into iCloud) to your new Apple ID by Editing it to the new ID in Manage your Apple ID?

If the old ID and new ID are two separate Apple Accounts, then you will have to get help from Apple, so you won't be able to resolve it until your call tomorrow.

However, if you simply changed the old ID to the current one via Manage your Apple ID then I need to know where you have the old ID signed in so I can provide steps that may allow you to get this resolved now. You mentioned Find My iPhone, so is the old ID signed into iCloud on an iPhone?

    Hi Gail,

I am currently signed into Icloud with find my Iphone on. I thought that if i signed out that i could sign back in again using my new email details, however it concerns me that if you proceed  all items currently stored on ICloud will be removed and that aside, when i try to sign out i am asked  to enter my password for my apple ID which i obviously no longer have.

You kinda get caught in a loop.

The two step verification requires entering your bithday, and then answering a security question. Foolishly i must have entered my birth date details incorrectly when i carried out the original ICloud set up so again it asks me to reset my password and advises that that a link has been sent to me which is great except that email address no longer exists!

Try installing Find my Friends... it will automatically sign you in https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8

    Hi warren,

You can proceed - it does not erase anything from iCloud itself - only removes things from your device, which will be pushed back from the cloud when you sign back onto the same iCloud account.

However, if you sign out one iCloud account and then sign on a totally different one (not a new version of the existing Apple/iCloud ID, but a totally separate Apple/iCloud ID), then you will be signing onto an account that has none of the current iCloud info since it is a totally different account.

It sounds like you did not change your old Apple ID to the one you are using now, but rather set up the one you are using now as a brand new Apple ID. If that is the case, then the only thing you can preserve from the current iCloud account is your Contacts. Everything else is tied to that old iCloud account. So, the Photo Stream, for example, will be deleted from your phone.

You are not using Two-step verification if you are being asked to answer Security Questions. You can, get your Security Questions reset by Apple Support so you can then change the password on that old account:

    ACCOUNT SECURITY CONTACT

Also, if you are interested in using Two-Step Verification in future, here is an article that explains how that works:
