Q: Upgrading OSX and GB tips
I'm currently on Mountain Lion with Garageband 6.0.5. I'd love to upgrade everything but I've read that the latest Garageband doesn't support 32bit plugins. I need to be able to run some session in 6.0.5. because of this. I've also read that you can install newer versions of GB and still keep a folder of the older version? If so, what's the best order to update so I can have the best of both worlds? But it also makes me think can you run 6.0.5. in Mavericks? It's a little confusing and I'm wondering if I should even bother!

GarageBand 6.0.5 is running well on Mavericks and on Yosemite as well.
Rename GarageBand to GarageBand 6.0.5 before you upgrade the system, and make a full backup of your current system (Time Machine or a bootable clone), so you can revert to your present installation, if need be. Don#T uninstall GarageBAnd 6.0.5, just download and install GarageBAnd 10.0 as well.
You can open GarageBand 6.0.5 projects in GarageBand 10.0, but but not the new GarageBand 10.0 projects in GarageBand 6.0.5. So start the projects in the older GarageBand and finish them in the newer Garageband version.
But update all older plug-ins, if you want to use GarageBand 10.0, see: GarageBand for Mac (v10.0): Unexpected behavior with Audio Units plug-ins - Apple Support
