If you can try starting up the mac in safe boot
At start up press and hold shift key and release when you see the apple symbol (safe boot takes along time to boot up btw so don't worry too much)
If that doesn't work try going to Recovery mode CMD+R again held at start up till you see the apple sign
go to disk utility and verify the disk repair if it advises so
