Q: turning on portrait mode

How can I get my iTough to enter portrait mode?

I have a brand new iTouch [6th generation] running iOS8.4.  It will not enter portrait [horizontal] mode. There  is some kind of a "squiggle" in the upper right-hand corner next to the battery-charge icon. From read I've read, that needs to be turned off. The directions are to hit the on/off switch twice in rapid succession which will display four icons on the bottom of the screen. I get two icons, not four.  A lot of the suggestions I reviewed date back in to 2112 - certainly there have been changes since then.

These instructions are based off of my iPhone 5s, but it should work. Go to your home screen and  sswipe up with one finger. The control center should then be up. Click the button circled in the below picture to turn off orientation lock.

You said " It will not enter portrait [horizontal] mode." Portrait mode ins the normal mode (long axis vertical), the Home button on the bottom. Landscape mode is the long axis horizontal

Note that not all app have a landscape mode.

    With the screen rotation unlocked

If the screen doesn't rotate on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

and screen still does not rotate in apps where it should rotate then

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    - Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

    - Restore from backup. See:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
