Aug 8, 2015 1:01 AM in response to barneyhairballby Roger Wilmut1,You could do it very occasionally but usually it's not necessary - it's only if any errors in the catalogue have arisen. It's unlikely to speed anything up.
When you start in safe mode there is a delay while it runs a check. Once done it will finish the boot and the check is then done and you can restart normally.
You can check, though not repair, the disk by opening Disk Utility and running 'Verify Disk'. If this comes up OK you don't need to run a repair.

Aug 8, 2015 1:10 AM in response to barneyhairballby barneyhairball,Morning. Can't sleep either?
When you say there is a delay, what will the screen look like during this delay? I have opened in safe mode in the past, and to me the screen just looks like its going a bit mad. I suppose I am asking, what will the screen look like to let me know the boot is finished?
Also, what is a catalogue?
Love your biography. I thought again about adding mine, and then thought it would be too boring, so left it blank again.
Regards.

Aug 8, 2015 2:03 AM in response to barneyhairballby Roger Wilmut1,I should have said 'Directory' - the directory the disk keeps to tell it where everything is. Sometimes errors creep in and Disk Utility checks things to make sure they are OK and amends the Directory if necssary.
When you boot in safe mode I would expect that you would see a plain screen with a progress bar. When that completes the computer will finish booting and the repair has been done. Once you are into the Finder, whatever you are seeing before that, you are OK to reboot to get the full facilities.
