Where to see whether iPod shuffle (ma564j/a) is updating or not ? Please help !!!

I've got this iPod shuffle ma564j/a. Connected first time to itunes, a message appeared "A update is available....Would you like to update iPod software ?". I clicked " yes" and then iPod symbol disappeared from the top. Now the problem is, it's been an hour and the symbol hasn't returned since. And I am not sure whether I should disconnect my iPod from my windows laptop. Because if it is updating and I disconnect, my iPod can get in trouble. So please tell me how to see whether my Ipod is updating or not ??
