With my MB Pro, I hooked my 27" iMac (mid 2010) to it in Target Display Mode and I have two screens with MB Pro as the master computer.  Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support.  I needed a mini display port cable though some newer macs can just accept a thunderbolt cable.
