Q: FCPX won't import the audio on my MOV files correctly

Hi - Hope someone can help.

I have mov files from my camera (JVC 850) that have 4 audio channels.

1+3 are deliberately blank and 2 and 4 have camera audio.

When I import my clips using the FCPX import function I end up with only 1 mono audio track on the clip and it has no audio.

If I preview the camera clip in finder the audio plays fine.

If I preview the imported version in my FCPX original media folder there is no audio

I get the same results for playing the clip in QT player - audio on the camera clip - no audio on the imported version

The real odd one is if I drag the camera clip onto the timeline from finder rather than using the import routine the audio is fine - all 4 tracks are there and play as expected.

I have not select any audio import options - i.e. not ticked remove silent channels or group stereo or separate mono tracks.

I am using FCPX 10.2.1

This is a new camera and has never imported as I would expect.

I have used other cameras without an issue but they have only ever had 2 channels of audio.

Whilst I can drag all my clips onto the timeline and force the correct audio import I should not need to and is somewhat cumbersome for a large number of clips.

Can anyone point me in the direction of what I am doing incorrectly or what needs changed in FCPX to allow the correct import?

What does the Inspector indicate with a clip that has been imported using the FCP X Import function?

Could it be this issue? If you can’t monitor mono or dual mono audio from Final Cut Pro X 10.2 in OS X 10.10.3 - Apple Support

I believe it is an import issue rather than a monitoring issue. I did check my system config to be sure and it was configured exactly as per the article.

I found that my config appeared to be as article stated, BUT, when reset to that same setting, it fixed the problem. In other words, it looked right but it wasn't right. Setting it again fixed issue.

How are you getting the clips into the Finder?

Camera files are copied from my memory card (I copy the complete folder) onto my HDD then I either import via FCPX or drag from my HDD into FCPX - crucially it is the same file that is either imported or dragged onto the timeline - but with different results...

Some screen shots of the results..

shot 1 - Inspector info from file import via FCPX import routine - imported directly from the camera card

shot 2 - Inspector info from file import by dragging file from Camera card directly onto FCPX timeline

shot 3 - both files on the timeline with obvious differences in audio waveforms..

Right now I'm as mystified as you regarding the no audio through FCP X import.
Can you try an Import with the four tracks having audio recorded?

It may be something specific to JVC or even the mode the cameras using.
Have you tried other settings?

There have been strange issues with specific cameras before until Apple is made aware of the problems we have.

Apologies for the delay in replying. Been filming!
I have now performed some additional tests and can only conclude that there is an issue with the JVC 850 file format/FCPX process.
I have recorded all permutations of audio from all to none and the only audio that imports using the FCPx Import routine is CH1.
All channels correctly 'import' when I drag the same clips from finder directly onto the timeline.
I have reported this to Apple in the hope that they can rectify..
Thank you for your assistance in trying to resolve this issue.
