Q: restrictions passcode problem

What is the difference between the passcode I enter to turn the iPhone on and the 'restrictions passcode" I am being asked for when trying to erase all settings and data? the phone has never had any problem accepting my passcode which is 4 numbers and 4 letters. I am unable to erase all data and settings before returning an iPhone to carrier because it keeps rejecting the passcode I use everyday. I also don't know why there is only room for 4 numbers in this spot because the passcode as I know it has numbers and letters. is the restrictions passcode different than the passcode I use every day? I also am certain that I never enable "restrictions" in settings>general>restrictions. This is set to on and I am unable to turn it off. How do I get the data erased before returning the phone? I can't return it until this is done.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.0.2

The passcode and restriction code are different numbers if you or someone helping you set them up as different numbers.  There are several ways to wipe the phone despite this forgotten restriction code.  The best might be using Find my iPhone.  If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

Thank you for your quick response. I did manage to erase it using find my iPhone. It turns out there was an "activation lock: on' message when I tried entering the serial number. This is an unexpected problem caused by Verizon disabling the phone as soon as I activated the replacement. It would have been helpful if Verizon had mentioned this when I activated the new replacement iPhone. I saw the instructions for "if you are trying to set up a phone given to you". I just went to icloud and selected this phone and erased it following the directions here on apple support. It did take a lot of searching to find that particular bit of information but only 5 minutes to erase and remove the phone from my Apple account.

The Activation Lock has nothing to do with Verizon. When Verizon deactivated your phone, all they did was disconnected from their network. The pass codes and activation lock are features that Apple provides and that the user has to enable.
