iPhone 6: Battery drains 50 to zero in a snap

The problem started immediately after the 8.4 upgrade The battery drains fast, and then somewhere around 50% left, the phone goes from 50% battery to 1% battery over a period of 10-30 minutes. Then it shuts off.

When I connect the phone to an outlet charger, it starts right up, and immediately shows ~50% battery life.

Here's some usage info:

** Location Services: Off

** Biggest battery hog: Facebook 20% (over 7 days)-- except today I listened to an album on Apple Music, and today only, Apple Music used up 88%.

** WIFI connected.

** Bluetooth off.

** Almost all notifications off

** Email checked manually

What is going on here? I've restarted (doesn't help), rebooted (doesn't help), reset the phone to brand new, (doesn't help).

Thanks so much,

Jeff

Sounds like a bad battery. You can try recalibrating the battery gauge, which might resolve it. Run the battery down until the phone shuts off. Connect it to power. If it comes back above 1% charge it for a minute or so, then run it down again. Repeat until you reach 1% before it shuts off. Then charge it to 100%. If the problem persists visit and Apple store or call Apple and they can test the battery (remotely, if necessary).

Regarding the 88%, if that is what appears at Settings/General/Usage - Battery Usage, that's a relative number, meaning that it used 88% of the energy actually used during the day, not 88% of total battery capacity. For example, if the battery went from 100% to 50% during the day, that would be 88% of 50%, or 44% of the total battery capacity. If you weren't doing anything but listening to music that is not an unusual result.

Lawrence Finch makes a good suggestion here. A+, mate

I just want to add, if it started after an update, the issue might be software related.

I had an app do this to me once. uninstalled the app, and BOOM no more battery issues.

If it's going to be too difficult to find out what app could be causing the problem, then reset all settings or a restore should do the trick.

I'll try the battery recalibration, thank you both! It's a way easier option than removing apps one-by-one and waiting for a result.

If it comes down to that process of elimination, I presume I should limit my efforts to .. apps I've actually opened? Or widen it to all apps that allow notifications? Or do I have to eliminate every single app on the phone, one by one?
