My ipod was damaged on deployment from explosions.. When i try to start the ipod it displays a circled Red X. Is there anything I can do to save the Ipod? i have pictures i want to recover off of it and hopefully still use.

either one of these options is going to erase it, so if you really want to get the photos back it might worth a shot to check out data recovery services.
Just a heads up, data recovery services are offered by a lot of different companies (apple is not one of them). If there's a way to do it, they'll know how.
- fair warning, the price tag on those services can sometimes be pretty high.
