Q: Scrolling issue in Arrange window

In one of my songs (and only one) which has multiple vocal takes, when I select a region and highlight it, the arrange window will not scroll properly. It wants to keep the highlighted region on the visible screen. While not being the end of the world, it does hinder my work flow. I've checked in other songs and the arrange window does not behave in this way. You can scroll freely whether a region is highlighted or not. I've checked all catch options and that does nothing.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Sounds like you may have a corrupted project.........

So, to test this theory and hopefully fix it....

Create a new project.. and then use the Selective Track Import (STI) feature to import the tracks from your problem project into your new one...

    http://music.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-use-selective-track-import-in-logic-p ro-9--audio-3181

Note: this tutorial is for LP9 but STI works the same way in LPX too.

    Blimey that sounds pretty serious....

Actually just today I have noticed the project running slower and slower, with it taking a long time to carry out basic functions, especially when an effect window is open. I've got 16Gb of Ram so I don't think the hardware is running out of steam and CPU and HD usage is quite small.

Then at one point the contents of the song completely disappeared! And when I pressed play the cursor left a weird black trace across the screen.

How does a file get corrupted?

I will carry out your suggestions, with thanks.

    Hi,

Unfortunately there are many different reasons why a project may get corrupted or become unstable... so it's hard to say exactly why in any given situation.

    However, if you download Etrecheck...

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Load up the project (but dont play it...)

Then run Etrecheck and post up the report it generates here.. that might help isolate/identify some of the causes of your issues....

    Cheers..

    Nigel

Note: Im in the studio for a few hours but I will go through your report when I get done, if no one else steps in, in the mean time..

    Here are the results:

    Problem description:

Various weird anomalies in a logic song. I cannot scroll through the arrangement in the arrange window if a region is highlighted. If I open an effect everything runs ultra slowly. At one point everything disappeared from the arrange window and when I pressed play a trailing black line was left behind the cursor as it played.

While I take a quick break.. Here is an observation based on the report you posted up...

       92%    Logic Pro

            10%    MIO Console

             5%    fontd

             5%    WindowServer

             3%    coreaudiod

Logic is using an extraordinary amount of CPU when it's not playing the project which tells me you probably are using a third party plugin or plugins.. that are draining CPU resources like crazy.... and your Mio console is taking a chunk too...

Tip: Apart from trying to eliminate which plugin or plugins are causing this CPU drain... which should be your main priority initially

Create an Audio track and select that track to handle Logic's  "Live Input Mode" when you are simply playing back....

    From the following support doc....

Logic Pro/Express: Tips for balancing multi-core performance - Apple Support

When a Software Instrument track is selected in the Arrange window, Logic enters "Live Input Mode". In this mode, Logic turns on every plug-in in the channel strip's signal path so the channel strip can be played live from a MIDI controller. All of this must be handled by a single thread and therefore just one core. It's a good idea to keep a track that uses an Audio channel strip selected in the Arrange window, unless you're actively playing or recording to a Software Instrument.

Failing that, make sure you are using the latest drivers for your Halo... and get rid of stuff like the M-Audio midi drivers that are not being used at this time.

I suspect however, you are going to find it's what you are using in that project.. (or how many of them you are using) that is causes the high drain on your system resources.... so try creating a new project and run Etrecheck again to double check its not Logic itself that is placing the drain on your system.

    Hi

I did an Etrecheck again with a new project open and without any tracks having been recorded (though I have opened a software instrument and an audio track and it has dropped to 2% usage. On a quick read though of the info on balancing the cores I didn't fully understand it, though I'll give it another go.

I am using loads of plugins and there are a lot of tracks, though all the plugins are logic's own.

I have to try not to let these issues get the better of me, though I'd much rather be getting on with the job in hand..... :-S (I ain't a natural to this)

    Hi Colin,

    Taking another quick break so......

I am using loads of plugins and there are a lot of tracks, though all the plugins are logic's own.

Then your project is apparently doing too much at the same time,  for your hardware....

    Tips:

Try freezing a few tracks to lighten the load on your hardware..

    Logic Pro X: Freeze tracks

    or

Use busses for any FX plugins that you are using across multiple tracks, that are using the same basic settings...

    https://ask.audio/articles/how-to-best-use-bus-channels-in-logic-pro

    Also,

If you are using Channel EQ.. make sure you turn off the Analyzer for each instance you have used... if you accidentally left it on...

    https://documentation.apple.com/en/logicstudio/effects/index.html#chapter=5%26se ction=1%26tasks=true

    Cheers..

    Hi Nigel

Thank you for the suggestions. I have frozen a few tracks like you suggested. (is it best if they are Green as apposed to the blue source only option?)

I am just about able to make a final mix with what I have and I think that despite the issue of not being able to scroll through the Arrange window if a region is highlighted, and the odd glitch and crash, it should be possible to do without major surgery on the way I have caved up the mix. Yes I have been way too over indulgent with plugins on every track.

Somehow I can get the apparent distancing of a voice better with an individual reverb on each track, and then a single one used on a bus for all tracks, than if I divert all tracks to two different reverbs over two busses. I don't know if that makes sense.

Some time, when I've got some time I need to experiment with this.

    Really appreciate all your help.

Never quite sussed why I can't scroll in the arrange window if a region is highlighted. Unless as you say the track has been in some way corrupted. I tried copying across each track using Selective Track Import, but all I seemed to be doing was copying across the problem since I ended up with a duplicate song.....

    Anyway, cheers and thanks!
