MacBook Pro Keynote to Projector

Hi,

I'm wanting to use my new MacBook Pro OS X Yosemite 10 10.4 to run a Keynote presentation to an NEC 100 projector. The connection is a VGA and I have a Thunderbolt VGA cable for the connection. The projector is on but I cannot get any image to the screen. Do I need to download a driver/software? Any tips as I have never used this option before.

Thanks,

Terry

There are no additional drivers required, Mac OS X has all the software you need.

When Keynote is in Play, by default it will display either the presentation or Presenter Display:

As a diagnostic test, do the following with both the projector and Mac powered off:

1- connect the Mac to the projector, 2 - power on the projector, 3 - then power on the Mac.

Does the projector show a start up image when first powered on, NEC logo or onscreen settings? If not the projector is faulty, most likely the lamp requires replacement. Refer to the user manual how you can verify this.

Many projectors automatically switch to the correct connector when a video signal is detected, but many have to be switched manually, either by a button on the projector or remote control, on the NEC 100 series projectors press the computer button (number 3 below).

Test the adaptor and VGA cable by connecting the Mac to a TV or computer display with a VGA connector.

The cables you should have are these:

Hi Gary,

Tried all those things. Yes, the projector does have an intro shot, then resolves to show a small box in the top left with the word computer.

Have tried pressing the button 3 on the remote and the sequence of connection and powering on as suggested, but still nothing. When I press play on my MacBook Pro, nothing changes on the projection screen.

Cables are as you have shown a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter plus the projector cable.

Any other ideas you can help me with?

Thanks,

Terry

This confirms the projector is all OK, and that its switched to the correct input. Therefore the signal is not getting to the input of the projector.

1 - Test the adaptor and VGA cable by connecting the Mac to a TV or computer display with a VGA connector. If you dont have this, a friend should be able to help out.

2 - Test the VGA cable on its own; swap over the VGA cable with another and test, you may have a couple lying around and they are easy to borrow.

3 - Cheap mini display port (the Thunderbolt connector) adapters are known to cause connection issues, always best to buy direct from the online Apple Store Apple Retail shop or a certified Apple reseller offering genuine accessories. Try borrowing one that works or purchase new as described.
