How do I unhide the compass rose/icon in google maps?

Hello All,

I was recently in google maps and accidentally tapped the Compass rose/icon that appears just below the navigation bar in the upper right. Ever since I did this the compass icon has disappeared or is hidden, and I have to idea how to get it back. Instead of the compass icon appearing in the upper right my location dot has a little blue arrow shoeing the direction my phone is pointing. I'm not asking about going into compass mode by tapping the find my location icon. I would like to bring back the compass icon w/ the red needle that points towards north.

I've already deleted and re-installed to no avail. I have a 4s running iOS 8.3.

Any suggestions?
