how do i free up storage space on my iPhone 6?

I'm getting a message on my phone "your storage is almost full". If I delete some videos and pictures on my phone, will they still be on iCloud?

That is because you have iCloud set to sync across all your devices. You can avoid this by going to iCloud on both devices and deselecting Photos, etc (whatever you do not want to auto sync). I personally prefer to use an outside storage service for my pictures and videos but many like/love iCloud.

Check the following areas

On the iPhone/iPad in Settings>Photos and Camera turn iCloud Photo Library on, select Optimize iPhone Storage, turn Upload to my Photo Stream off.

On the Mac in System Preferences>iCloud>Photos>Options turn iCloud Photo Library on, turn My Photo Stream off. Then open Photos Preferences>General and turn Copy Items to the Photos Library on.

This will minimize usage on your iPhone and store all pictures in the Photos Library. The Photos Library is on your Mac, in the Pictures folder, back that up and you will a have a copy of all pictures ever taken whether deleted or not. Use Time Machine to perform the backup.
