Hi,

If this is Yosemite use the Apple Icon Menu and About this Mac and see if the Serial Number shows up (I don't need to know it - just that it is present.).

If it is an Older version use the Apple Icon Menu and select About this Mac then click twice on the line that reads the OS X version number.

This will change to the Build number (another counting system Apple uses for the OS) and then the Serial Number should show up.

If the Serial Number is missing then the App will not register with the iMessages server.

You may have have a Logic/Mother board replaced or the computer may have been refurbished and the number not put back on the new board.

You will have to visit an Apple Store if this is the case.
