Q: Need to Have Music Playlist Synch with Stored Music

Because I had to do a complete restore of Windows 7, I had to reload my music library.  It now resides under iTunes/Media/Music, and I set this to be my source in iTunes.  However, not all music on the disk appears in my Music, Playlist.  I cannot find albums that are on file and play when I search iTunes.  How do I make sure all files are on the Playlist?

iPod nano, Windows 7

    Hi Dick,

I understand since you restored your Windows 7 computer, some music files appear to be missing in your iTunes Library.  The resource below will explain how to organize your iTunes library and find the missing files if they exist somewhere on your hard drive.

Locate and organize your iTunes files - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204668

Once you have everything back in place, I would suggest you create a backup of your iTunes library on an external drive so you don't have to repeat these steps in the future.

Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive - Apple Support

    Take care,

    Judy:

All of my songs were stored and saved on external drive under iTunes Media, Music.  For example Andre Segovia, Segovia Collection Vol. 3 shows 10 "songs".  These do not appear on my Playlist.  Some appear, but others do not.  Some which I have, such as Beausoleil "Cajuniztion" has disappeared entirely, but it was there when I tried to "load from folder."  Any further suggestions.

    Dick

The symptoms you describe suggest that you've restored your media folders but not the iTunes database (the iTunes Library.itl file) which acts as the catalog for your library and holds the locations of all your media files.  Changing the iTunes Media folder location in Edit > Preferences > Advanced does not alter where iTunes locates existing library content - this only determines where new additions to the library are placed.

Ideally you'll be able to restore the iTunes library.itl file from a backup created before you reinstalled Windows.  If not, you'll need to recreate your library by re-importing media files.

Thanks.  What you say makes some sense.  Unfortunately, Apple, as usual, is about as clear as and apple when it comes to instructions.  I had backed up the Media/Music files, and did not realize that a set of files labeled .ITL also had to be saved.  What is interesting, however, is that man of the library files reappeared when I reloaded Media/Music.  It looks like many of my 6,000+ files probably will have to be reloaded.
